Cheaper and Cleaner Catalyst for Burning Methane

ScienceDaily -- ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2012) — As the world's accessible oil reserves dwindle, natural gas has become an increasing important energy source. The primary component of natural gas is methane, which has the advantage of releasing less carbon dioxide when it's burned than do many other hydrocarbon fuels. But because of the very stable structure of the methane molecule, it can be difficult to access the energy stored within. When unburned methane escapes into the atmosphere, it's a greenhouse gas 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Now, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, along with collaborators from Italy and Spain, have created a material that catalyzes the burning of methane 30 times better than do currently available catalysts.

We have more oil than we can possibly use, or our children, grand children and great grand children. Give the "we're about to run out of oil" lie a rest. This has been disproven over and over which should lead people to wonder about the accuracy or sincerity of the source.

There are too many other uses where it is the ideal fuel and not easily replaced - like for heating homes and making glass.

Sounds very promising -- I hope it lives up to the initial results (and is commercially feasible). It's also an object lesson in why you don't want to force feed winners in advance. It sounds as though this could be better than some of the other green energy technologies that are in fashion right now.

Cheap gas is gone forever and all we have left is the dwindle stuff, which is more difficult and expensive to get to, i.e. gasoline will not be produced cheaper and cleaner, at no cost to the consumer. Some call it progress. The only unanswered question is how much is too much?
